As a child, I never saw anyone who looked like me represented in the media. This absence fueled a passion within me to create spaces where people like me could see themselves reflected. Whether through acting, producing, or writing, my goal has always been to inspire the next generation by providing representation and amplifying diverse voices.
My journey as a writer began in childhood, where I would scribble and draw on printer paper, stapling them together to create makeshift books. These early moments ignited my love for storytelling. My cultural heritage is deeply important to me, which is why my debut as an author began with "Henry," a novel centered around my great-great-great-great-grandfather. It felt natural to explore my roots and share stories from my community.
In the photo attached, you'll see me on my very first day of school. It's also the image featured on the back cover of "Graduation Chronicles," a poignant reminder of where I started. Despite facing challenges in my education, particularly in English courses, I refused to be discouraged. These books are not just for me; they're for that little boy who didn't always see himself in the books he read, and for all Indigenous children who deserve to know that their dreams are valid and achievable.
My most recent book, "The Battle of Hayes Pond," serves as a continuation of the narrative initiated by "Henry." The story fascinated me, and I was astonished that it hadn't been told in literary form before. I consider it an honor to be the first to bring this important historical event to life through literature. Through my writing, I aim to empower and educate, ensuring that the stories of my community are heard and celebrated.
